Only More Explicit

Women Are Never Front-Runners (Gloria Steinem, New York Times, 1/8/08)
The woman in question became a lawyer after some years as a community organizer, married a corporate lawyer and is the mother of two little girls, ages 9 and 6. Herself the daughter of a white American mother and a black African father — in this race-conscious country, she is considered black — she served as a state legislator for eight years, and became an inspirational voice for national unity.

Be honest: Do you think this is the biography of someone who could be elected to the United States Senate? After less than one term there, do you believe she could be a viable candidate to head the most powerful nation on earth?

If you answered no to either question, you’re not alone. Gender is probably the most restricting force in American life, whether the question is who must be in the kitchen or who could be in the White House. This country is way down the list of countries electing women and, according to one study, it polarizes gender roles more than the average democracy.
The purpose of the women's movement has always been to protect white privilege from blacks.

No, the purpose of the "women's movement" has always been to protect male privilege from women.

Now, I've been accused of being cryptic, but that's going to take some explaining.

Is this really a new idea?

Is the celebration & promotion of single-motherhood for the benefit of men or women?

Is the change in the dominant female type in advertising from Pleasant Housewife to Paris Hilton for the benefit of men or women?

I'm not romanticizing male/female cultural differences from decades ago, but the notion that the answer was to mainstream caddish behavior among males and encourage women to go along and that that was for the benefit of women is risible.

Now, if you want to pick a movement that is designed to protect white privilege, environmentalism is a better bet.

I don't know about "intended" and I'm not sure blacks were targeted specifically in any meaningful sense, but modern feminism is certainly an elitist doctrine benefiting upper middle class professionals (of both sexes)at the expense of those lower down the socio-economic scale. So, as anon says, is environmentalism and so is the new militant atheism.

Modern feminism is a blank slate doctrine.

That is the only way Steinem can write "Gender is probably the most restricting force in American life ..."

Hey, this is getting nasty. Do you think there is anyway the GOP can orchestrate a national televised debate between Gloria and the Reverend Al.
